Unsung Hero of the Year

The new for 2014 category – the Unsung Hero award – was presented to Cheltenham volunteer Sarah Stone in recognition of her tireless work as a local youth charity trustee.

Having been a Trustee of Cheltenham Youth For Christ for six years, serving as an exceptional Trustee Secretary, Sarah took on the role of Chair of Trustees 18 months before nomination. In addition to her trustee responsibilities she gives up a day a week to spend in the office encouraging staff and volunteers as well as providing invaluable admin support around funding, event management and any other task that needs to be undertaken.

Sarah's nominators spoke of how highly the staff team at Cheltnerhma YFC view her. "Her support in the background, her manner and approach allows the team more time to focus on face to face work whilst still ensuring the background organisation and admin is completed. A classic Martha type, she serves diligently whilst looking for no reward.  When needed, she is willing to go beyond her comfort zone for the benefit of the work."

The nomination praised the way that Sarah seeks no glory, preferring to turn the limelight back on what God is doing in the lives of the young people they work with.  They said "without Sarah’s input we would be a poorer organisation without a key part of the team.  We would miss her wisdom, maturity, organisation and encouragement.  For us there is no doubt that she is a worthy of the Unsung Hero of the Year award."
