Volunteer of the Year

The prestigious Volunteer of the Year award was shared for the first time, with 18-year-old catholic lay volunteer Rose Greensmith (from Wanstead), and retired chess enthusiast David Stemp (Portsmouth).

Rose supports the Youth co-ordinator in a huge amount of ways, from co-ordinating and training the young altar servers to running the monthly youth Mass and taking a lead in the holiday activity programmes. Nominees praised Rose's flexibility, teamwork and leadership skills, reporting that she is valued by the whole Parish community.

She supports young people pastorally as well as being an excellent public speaker. Katherine O'Brien, who nominated Rose said "Rose's outgoing attitude and dedication means everyone who meets her are inspired by her example and her empathetic and caring nature means she is able to build effective relationships with others. She is always looking for additional ways to be involved in youth ministry within the Parish and I really can't recommend her highly enough."

Sharing the Award with Rose was the dedicated David Stemp. David, in his late 70's, has been involved with young people for a long time through scouting. However, it is for his involvement in a breakfast club at a local academy school, as part of the Portsmouth Deanery Youth Work Project, that he was nominated for the Award.

Nominator, Ben Mizen, explained why he thought David should win this Award. "David has been a volunteer with us at the school for the past 6 years. He is the most consistent team member and he brings a mature perspective that the young people love. His youth work is beautiful - he teaches and plays chess with young people over breakfast - it embodies participation, respect and fun. It is wonderful to watch.   David, and the project he serves on, deserve some recognition for working with some of the toughest young people in the heart of Portsmouth. He is a shining of example of how good senior figures can be in a youth work setting."
