Barbara Cole - Volunteer of the Year 2015
For more than 30 years, Barbara has been committed to the Pendle Youth Fellowship, running weekly sessions to help young people develop their understanding of Christianity. In her own work as a preacher on the local Methodist Circuit, Barbara works hard to involve young people, encouraging them to develop preaching and worship leading skills. The youth benefit from her experience and wisdom and she is a great role model.
Dean Lawson who nominated Barbara was in the youth group she ran when he was a teenager. He said, "Recently Barbara has had a tough time making sure there was still a family worker, a PAIS worker (gap year volunteers, for which there are financial commitments) and sufficient funding. Essentially she is the only reason we still have a youth group. The Youth group to which she is a volunteer leader is the reason I'm a Christian, and I'm sure the same is true for many others over the twenty-odd years she's been leading and without Barbara there probably wouldn't even be a youth group."
Barbara said that she was honoured to receive the award and dedicated it to the many young people she has had the privilege of getting to know over the years, before leaving the awards ceremony early to join her youth group at their weekend away!
